COURSE SUMMARY:

Aimed at those who would like to write a novel – either absolute beginners or those who have been struggling to finish a project.

COURSE OUTLINE:

  1. Getting Started: generating ideas, genres, tropes, market awareness, traditional or self-published
  2. Finding the time: commitment, prioritisation, time management, procrastination
  3. Story Structure: plotters and pantsters, the soggy middle, hitting the beats
  4. Characterisation: Writing believable characters. Conflict. Character arcs.
  5. Layers and techniques: POV, setting, voice,  writers’ block
  6. WIP surgery: Participants will have the opportunity to share an extract with the group, or to bring a current problem or challenge

COURSE OUTCOMES:

  • An understanding of basic story structure, characterisation, and other craft essentials
  • A sense of the personal barriers and behaviours that may be preventing them from starting, progressing, or finishing an extended writing project
  • Tailored support including peer support

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Catherine Tinley is an award winning author of historical romance. She has published ten novels, and her eleventh will be published in October 2023. Her first book, Waltzing with the Earl, won the Rita® Award for Best Historical Romance 2018, while Rags-to-Riches Wife won the RoNA Award for Best Historical Romance 2021 as well as the HOLT Medallion, and A Waltz with the Outspoken Governess has won the RoNA Award for Best Historical Romance 2022.

She has loved reading and writing since childhood, and has a particular fondness for love, romance, and happy endings. After a career encompassing speech & language therapy, Sure Start, maternity campaigning and being President of a charity, she currently manages a maternity hospital in her day job.
