About the programme

Stories shaped
with the community.

Traveller Healing Through Stories is a Traveller-led creative wellbeing project that places participants’ voices, choices and experiences at the centre of the process.

Through supported writing and storytelling sessions, participants explore subjects that matter to them and develop their ideas into a completed story and storyboard.

The programme aims to strengthen confidence and connection while creating thoughtful opportunities to challenge stigma and misinformation about Traveller identity and culture.

Programme aims

Creative expression with a wider purpose.

01

Creative voice

Create space for participants to shape and share stories in their own way.

02

Wellbeing

Support confidence, connection and emotional wellbeing through a structured creative process.

03

Representation

Share participant-led perspectives on Traveller identity, culture and lived experience.

04

Understanding

Use stories and creative outputs to sustain conversations with wider communities.

The programme journey

From co-design to public sharing.

Phase One

Listen and co-design

Participants and partners shape how the programme will work, including themes, creative approaches and how work may be shared.

Phase Two

Create and develop stories

Weekly creative writing and storytelling sessions support participants to develop an original story, with additional wellbeing support available throughout delivery.

Phase Three

Draft and storyboard

Ideas are developed into finished stories and visual storyboards, with participants retaining choice over how their work is represented.

Phase Four

Share and continue the conversation

With participants’ agreement, completed work will inform public library exhibitions and a short learning resource for community groups and schools.

Partnership

Traveller-led and
delivered together.

The programme is led by Cavan Traveller Movement, working with Cavan County Local Development, Foróige UBU and Verbal.

Community partners support participation and access, while Verbal provides the creative storytelling programme.

Programme funding

Traveller Healing Through Stories is supported through the Traveller Wellbeing Through Creativity programme, a joint initiative involving the HSE, Creative Ireland Programme, Healthy Ireland and the Arts Council.
