Verbal Wellbeing A Shared Reading Outreach Model Overview: Verbal Wellbeing is a low threshold, high quality outreach model of affective bibliotherapy centered around shared reading activities. This approach emphasises the value and impact of literature in supporting positive mental health & emotional wellbeing through fostering meaningful group engagement. Structured Reading Sessions: The model operates on a weekly schedule, convening participants in designated community venues. Each session is characterized by the reading of pre-selected short stories, facilitated by a trained and accredited volunteer. The stories, chosen or written based on the group's specific needs, are read aloud to ensure uniform engagement. Discussion and Analysis: Embedded within the reading sessions are structured discussion intervals. These are designed to prompt participants to reflect on the content. Using questions and conversation starters developed by our specialised psychology team, the aim is to encourage participants to contextualize the story within their own experiences, promoting both comprehension and introspection. Safety and Accessibility: Central to the Verbal Wellbeing model is the creation of a secure and inclusive environment, especially catering to individuals who are vulnerable or have specific needs. To ensure accessibility, we have established venues across Northern Ireland, the border counties, and the North of England and continue to look for new partners to share this approach. Verbal Wellbeing can also be accessed as a digital product. See here for more information.
