It is crucial to provide accessible and engaging support to adult carers to help them build resilience and develop coping mechanisms to manage their emotions and improve quality of life.

Life story is a proven affective bibliotherapy model that uses literature to support vulnerable individuals in managing their emotions and building resilience. This project aims to use the affective bibliotherapy model to work with adult carers to help them develop resilience and tackle feelings of depression, anxiety, and isolation.

Project Description: The workshops will be co-designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for adult carers to explore their emotions and build resilience. Each workshop will be structured around the facilitated reading of a short story or poem with a series of semi structured group discussions specifically to help participants identify and manage their emotions and develop coping mechanisms.  The stories/poems will cover a range of themes such as Compassionate Care, Connection, Self-care, Health & Wellbeing, positive Mindset, Resilience and Gratitude

The aims of the project are to;

  • Improve mental health and wellbeing of carers
  • Enhance resilience
  • Enhance ability for carers to have time to enjoy their own lives and enjoy a carer/life balance
  • Create connection with other carers
  • Create a support network between peers
  • Develop friendships with other carers
  • Provide an opportunity to share lived experiences, to share learning/signposting

How it works: The programme will be delivered in small groups to ensure that each participant receives individual attention and support and the group size will be limited to ten participants. The programme will be delivered both in person for groups as well as online sessions for individuals from March to September 2024.
